Family photos are a timeless tradition, capturing moments and memories that will be cherished for generations to come. Whether it’s a casual gathering or a formal portrait session, creating great family photos requires a combination of technical skill and a knack for capturing genuine emotions. Here are six tips for great family photos to help you prepare for those heartwarming moments.
1. Choose a photographer you trust
Confidence in your chosen photographer is key to a successful and stress-free session. Choose a photographer that you know you can depend on to choose the right location, manage any kind of light, create the most authentic and flattering posing, and manage any type of personality. I am determined to create magical memories in a fun and carefree manner that is quick and fun for all. Keep reading for more tips for great family photos.
2. Pack a bag
Bribery is always welcome and keeping the men and the children in our lives full and hydrated is key. Having a brush or comb on hand along with some hairspray and bobby pins can help tame anything that happens between home and your session location. Small items are always helpful for littles and can serve as an activity and prop for your photos. A blanket, books, and hot cocoa for a fun fall family session. Or plush vintage-inspired Christmas ornaments to decorate a tree at the farm for your Christmas photos.
3. Choose your outfits with purpose
Nailing your outfits is one of the best tips for great family photos. As we approach cooler temperatures it is important that children especially are dressed appropriately for the weather. If you are planning for a Christmas tree farm session in late October or November dressing in layers is a fun way to ensure that everyone looks sharp, well dressed, and still cozy and warm for the cooler temperatures. Even for little ones a puffer vest and fun winter hat for boys or a faux fur vest for little girls and cute earmuffs or stitched mittens can be adorable. Little ones are less tolerant to the chill in the air so keep their comfort level in mind to keep the tears away at session time.
I recommend keeping your color choices and palette neutral and in softer tones avoiding too much contrast and dark colors. The camera loves soft pinks, muted blues, classic neutrals, leather, and white. Keep things interesting by varying your textures. Choose three to five muted colors and spread them evenly among each person to be photographed and add accent colors like denim, brown leather, or a cozy cream to tie everything together. You don’t all have to wear the same type of outfit. If mom or daughter is in a dress, you don’t have to dress all the girls in dresses. Mix up the accessories for men and boys with bowties, plaid vests, or suspenders.
4. Chat with your kiddos and hubby beforehand
Let everyone know ahead of time how important family photos are to you and thank them in advance for helping to make the session go smoothly and for all to have fun. Plan a fun family activity together for after your session no matter how the session goes.
5. Consider a prop
If you love candid family photos and are wishing for moments that look and feel authentic, I recommend adding a prop or two that resonates on a personal level with your family. A picnic blanket and a season-appropriate snack is always a fun idea. Think of a thermos and hot chocolate, cider and donuts, or watermelon. Incorporating your children’s favorite books or activities is always a hit along with anything seasonal to enjoy together while being photographed.
6. Have fun
Once your session is booked and your outfits are chosen, remember to be kind to yourself and your family as your session date rolls around. Some days don’t always go as planned but with a little grace you can relax, enjoy your family, laugh, follow your photographer’s lead and everything will come together.
In closing, capturing great family photos is a wonderful way to preserve cherished memories. With the right location, clothing choices, and a focus on candid moments, we can create a collection of images that will be treasured for years to come. Remember to enjoy the process, have fun with your family, and let your love and connection shine through in every frame. Want more tips?
