Some weddings feel like a dream from the moment they begin. Christina and Kevin’s elegant Planterra wedding was just that. Thoughtful, emotional, stylish, and unforgettable. From heartfelt traditions to playful moments, their day reflected everything that matters most to them: family, fun, culture, and connection.
As a Detroit wedding photographer, I’ve had the joy of working at Planterra Conservatory many times. But no two weddings ever feel the same. This one stood out from the start. It was a blend of soft, romantic styling with vibrant energy. Every detail was intentional and a personal reflection of their story and history. Every part of the day flowed seamlessly.
The day began slowly and intentionally. Christina and Kevin got ready together in a space they rented, surrounded by their closest family and friends. Their sweet corgi made an appearance during this part of the day, hopping onto laps, stealing treats and bringing smiles to everyone in the room. It was such a relaxed start—no rushing, no stress, just calm energy and quiet excitement.
The couple chose to honor their Chinese heritage with a tea ceremony before the official ceremony began. Christina wore a red and gold Qun Kwa, and Kevin wore a traditional Tang Suit. Both outfits symbolize happiness, luck, and a prosperous future. They looked incredible.
During the tea ceremony, they served tea to their parents and received words of wisdom and gifts in return. Clementines sat nearby, a symbol of abundance and joy. A small moment that still makes me smile? Later that evening, I spotted a single orange tucked into a reception space corner. Unplanned, but perfectly on theme. Almost as if fate had left its own blessing.
Before the main, elegant Planterra wedding ceremony, Christina and Kevin took a moment alone. Seeing each other in their wedding day finest had Kevin tearing up before he ever looked at Christina. A theme that continued throughout their wedding day. Interestingly enough, while Kevin shed plenty of happy tears he also is incredibly witty, silly, and just so fun to be around. They exchanged private vows in a tucked-away corner of Planterra. Kevin’s happy tears returned. And Christina held his hands and smiled with complete understanding. It was a moment just for them, free from distractions.
These are the types of memories that never fade. The in-between pauses, the gentle wiping of your partner’s tears, the look in someone’s eyes when words don’t come easily.
Planterra Conservatory is already a show-stopper with its towering greenery and glass ceiling. Add soft florals in creams, blues, and rich-toned orchids, and it transforms into something even more magical.
As Christina walked down the aisle, light poured through the glass above. The emotion in the room was palpable. The couple stood beneath a canopy of flowers, surrounded by loved ones, and promised forever.
After the ceremony, as they stepped outside for a few quick portraits, a gust of wind caught Christina’s veil and carried it into the air. Somehow, it stayed perfectly clean. And in true Christina fashion, she simply laughed. It’s moments like this that remind you how joyfully unpredictable weddings can be.
As guests moved into the reception space, they were greeted with personal, meaningful touches everywhere. The table numbers were displayed in brass stands with navy paper and tiny hanging koi fish that lit up once the sun went down. These fish weren’t just beautiful—they symbolized strength, love, and perseverance. The real-life koi pond in the conservatory literally frames the entrance before entering the full reception space.
The color palette stayed consistent: navy, soft cream, and hints of blue to tie in the hydrangeas. Everything felt cohesive but not overdone—elegant, just like the rest of the day. Planterra’s floral team truly outdid themselves. The centerpieces were lush, layered, and intricate while the featuring timeless roses with rich pops of color. Every piece felt intentional and well-placed.
At the bar, guests chose between two signature drinks: the “Lee”-chee Martini, inspired by Christina’s last name, and a White Wine Sa ‘ng’ ria, a nod to Kevin’s. The cocktails were as flavorful as they were fun, and they were a hit throughout the night.
Another standout detail? The guestbook table. Rather than a traditional book, Christina and Kevin set up a Polaroid station. Guests took selfies, attached them to scrapbook pages, and added little notes. It was playful, modern, and full of personality. Much like the Kevin and Christina themselves.
As dinner was served, the room settled into a calm rhythm. The candle light flickered on the tables and the edison bulbs sparkled overhead. Friends and family stood to give toasts, some brought laughter, others brought tears. It was clear that these two are deeply loved and supported.
Rather than one big cake, Christina and Kevin chose to offer a custom dessert spread. Think bite-sized sweets in elegant trays, beautifully styled and easy to enjoy. Still, they kept one special cake just for them. A heart-shaped mini cake for their cutting moment.
That’s where things took a turn toward the fun. Kevin couldn’t resist the classic frosting-on-the-face move. Not once, but multipe times. Christina laughed, wiped it away, and never missed a beat. Their energy together was pure joy. Each time Kevin leaned into his true self, Christina would jump right in and follow along.
The dance floor opened with something no one expected. A fully choreographed first dance to a Beyoncé song. It was polished, energetic, and completely entertaining. Guests erupted into applause before it was even finished. From that point on, the dance floor stayed full. Friends, cousins, parents, everyone joined in. It was one of those receptions where no one wants the night to end.
As someone who works at Planterra often, I can honestly say it’s one of the best venues in Michigan. The staff is kind, professional, and deeply experienced. The floral and design team works magic. The catering is consistently excellent. And the space? It’s a dream to photograph. Every day is perfect, no matter what happens outside the doors. Snow showers in May? Yes, that happened in 2012! No problem; it’s still perfect in the lush space that is Planterra. More than that, the team makes couples feel supported and relaxed. That energy creates space for genuine moments to unfold. It shows up in every photo.
Christina and Kevin’s elegant Planterra wedding was the perfect mix of tradition, personality, and celebration. From private vows to signature drinks. From choreographed first dances to personal touches. Every moment reflected who they are and how they love. Their story doesn’t end here… it’s only just beginning.
Kevin and Christina, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for inviting Karli and I into these precious memories.
